Besides the well known Bearded Dragon and Water Dragon, Agamid lizards consist of 35 genera and over 3900 species!
Lizards in the Agamidae family include: agamas, dragons, tree lizards, sailfin lizards, and other agamids. Agamid lizards are considered the "Old World"
equivalent of the iguanidae because they are found on the "old
world" continents of Africa, Asia, and Australia. Another
similarity to the iguanas is that they come in terrestrial (land dwelling), arboreal (living in trees), and semi-aquatic (able to live both on land and in water) types.
The lizards in the Agamidae family have well developed limbs, long tails, and
often have bizarre forms such as crests, dewlaps and expandable appendages.
The male agamids are often brightly colored. Many Agamids will breed easily in captivity, laying soft-shelled
eggs in ground burrows.
