Bird Care

Bird Care Birds can make wonderful pets! Prior to becoming a bird owner, however, you should have a basic understanding of how to take care of a bird.

Bird care can be a trickier business than caring for larger, domestic pets like dogs and cats. We have several tips that are essential for the health and well-being of your bird:

Recognizing signs that your bird is healthy or sick will help you know when a vet might be needed and could save your bird's life. Signs Your Bird Is Healthy:
  • Vocalizes frequently; singing, chirping, or talking
  • Energetic
  • Good appetite
  • Sleeps with it's head turned 180 degrees
  • Sleeps standing on one leg
Signs Your Bird Might Be Sick:
  • Less energetic
  • Does not vocalize often
  • Shows loss of appetite
  • Stands on both legs to sleep
  • Falls off perch
  • Sneezes
Other bird care tips to consider for the health and well-being of your bird are:

Where to Keep Your Bird
  • Do not place your bird in the kitchen or in a room that is too near to the kitchen. A small amount of smoke or the vapors from teflon cookware could kill your bird.
  • Do not place the bird cage too close to a window.
  • Place your bird's cage so that it is at eye-level or lower.
Bird Care and Diet
  • A healthy diet includes a wide variety of grains, seeds, fruits and green vegetables as well as plenty of daily water. Nutritionally balanced pelleted diets are also available.
  • Never feed your bird foods that contain chocolate or caffeine.
Create a Safe Environment
  • Make sure your bird's environment is safe and clean.
  • Make sure the cage is large enough for your bird to spread it's wings twice as long if needed and that there is enough room for it to hop around and play with toys.
Playtime
  • You need to invest time to socialize with your bird to prevent loneliness and depression.
  • If you leave for an extended period of time, leave music or the TV on softly in the background.
